Living Oil-Free for 24 Hours: An Impossible Challenge? (2026)

In an attempt to understand our reliance on petrochemicals, I embarked on a 24-hour challenge to live without them. It quickly became apparent that this was an impossible task, as petrochemicals are deeply ingrained in our daily lives. From the moment I awoke, I was surrounded by products derived from crude oil and natural gas, from my bed to my toothbrush. Even my attempt to avoid petrochemicals by choosing organic and natural alternatives revealed the pervasive nature of these materials. For instance, my bed sheets, while organic and natural, were made from bamboo, a plant that requires petrochemical-derived fertilizers and pesticides for growth. My shower, with its acrylic bathtub and hot water, relied on the mysterious process of water heating, often involving plastic components. The day's challenges continued as I navigated a petrochemical-laden supermarket, with single-use plastic packaging and imported goods, and even my dog's walk led to a petrochemical-derived bandage. The realization of our dependence on these materials is alarming, especially considering the environmental impact of plastics, which contributed 3.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. This experiment highlights the difficulty of completely avoiding petrochemicals, even in a conscious effort to do so. However, it also offers a glimmer of hope, as the world is shifting towards more electrical and renewable energy solutions, which can reduce our reliance on petrochemicals. The challenge lies in finding sustainable alternatives that are affordable and accessible to all, ensuring a more environmentally friendly future.
